What GPA is required to become an officer in the US Navy?

  1. Tryg says:

Basically no chance without at least a 3.5 and your target should be at least 3.8. The April OCS selection board was just cancelled and there may not be another this year, though.

  2. Been there-done that says:

There isn’t one. The Navy will take a "whole person" approach. A high GPA is undoubtedly a good thing, but the Navy also wants leaders. What is your involvement in extracurriculars? Do you just show up or are you serving in a leadership role?

If you work hard and do well, the GPA will take care of itself. Just do your best and you will be fine.

you do not enlist as an officer. you must apply for a commission. minimum 2.5 GPA to even be eligible. you are not competitve unless you have a 3.5 or better, preferably in a Hard science like Engineering.

    Hello Natsue,

There is no required GPA. What is there, however, is the competition between people who want to become officers and then the GPAs get matched against each other.

Supposing no person ever, ever got any grade higher than a "C". Nobody got "Bs" or "As"… nobody, purposely. Then, that 2.0 GPA would become the average and it would become meaningless as a "factor" to weed out and select one person over another when you only have 1 officer slot and 100 people wanting it.

But, people do excel for the maximum GPS score of a 4.0.

Thus, the service can use that against people applying for commissioning.

So, now, based on what i see and my own college experience:

    I advise people to:

Have a GPS between 3.8 – 4.0 to be highly competitive for commissioning. That is above the Average.

Have an ACT score between 27 – 32, where the US average is between 17 – 19.
    Have a combined SAT score between 1450 – 1500, where US averages are between 1000 – 1200.

Remember, the service will discriminate and seek out the most highly educated people for its officer corps.

Now, where are YOU in this score jungle?

    Larry Smith
    Senior Master Sergeant, USAF (Ret.)
    First Sergeant

You will need a 2.5 minimum to apply for a commission. And if you don’t have well over a 3.0 you aren’t going to be competitive.
